The octopus is a very fluid and sensual creature. I've always thought that the Milky Way looked like a spinning octopus, and so that was the inspiration for this piece. The eye is the Sun, the center, and the source. Also the beak is extended as a reminder that all things created are eventually consumed back into the Void.
