Mystery of Mysteries. This is a two color woodcut in black and metallic gold. It was inspired by a walk taken past a statuary shop that was crowded with different statues, all depicting the sphinx in various styles and according to various traditions. The creature depicted here is the Greek sphinx. She is the one who posed the riddle at the gate of Thebes. Only if the riddle were answered would a person be allowed to pass through the gates. If they should fail, she would destroy them. She represents the trials of initiation.
